Google Calendar Gets a Makeover


Google is getting a complete makeover as part of the transition to Google+. Google’s popular calendaring service is no exception.

The redesigned Google Calendar, which rolled out to users on Wednesday, are designed to be “just cosmetic.” Google hasn’t added any new features to Calendar, but instead has made it look more like Google+.

Some of the changes to Google Calendar include merging the Quick Add button with the Create button, adding more icons for functions such as Print, Refresh, reminders and guests, and the removal of the Save and Discard buttons on the bottom of the page. The big change that users will notice though is the blockier interface, the changes in color and the increased use of white space for the background.

In an announcement, Google says that the changes are all about removing clutter and increasing the interoperability between the desktop and mobile devices.

“The way people use and experience the web is evolving, and our goal is to give you a more seamless and consistent online experience — one that works no matter which Google product you’re using or what device you’re using it on,” the company said.

The search giant recently redesigned its popular homepage with a smaller logo and the darker Google+ navigation bar. Expect more Google products to be redesigned to fit in with Google’s new social project.

To see the revamped look for Google Calendar, click “Try the new look” in the upper right corner of the app. You can always go back to the old way if you don’t like the redesign.

Google+ Sparks




Google+ Sparks is Google's content recommendation and discovery engine. Users can search different topics and find relevant articles, videos and photos. Users can then share that content with their friends.

Meet the Top 15 Photographers on Instagram [PICS]


The nature of most social networks is such that brands and big name celebrities attract the most fans and followers. This is not the case on Instagram, where photographers, designers and artists dominate the charts.

The hot — but still indie — social network for iPhoneographers has never publicly revealed its top 20 users. That changes today, as Instagram has exclusively shared its most-followed users list with Mashable.

Instagram’s top users, as seen below in a photo gallery that highlights their art, are a unique bunch who collectively love to edit their iPhone photos and share them with other photo aficionados. Some have a predilection for the Earlybird filter, most appreciate a smattering of camera effects applications and a few are Instagram-only mobile photographers.

Our gallery excludes MTV (ranked fourth with 52,133 followers), Burberry (ranked eleventh with 45,366 followers), @jack (Jack Dorsey, CEO and founder of Square, ranked twelfth with 44,845 followers) and NPR (ranked thirteenth with 44,242 followers). We decided instead to focus on the everyday Instagram users who have managed to amass impressive followings by the merit of their art alone.

Instagram was not the first iPhone app with camera effects or mobile photo-sharing, nor will it be the last, but it’s certainly representative of a larger iPhoneography movement that is captivating and inspiring mobile users around the world.

How she's using Instagram: "Instagram reminded me that photography is an art. I'm a photographer by trade but because I had a seven pound camera in my hand all the time and didn't own a point and shoot that took good enough photographs, I never took photos of my own life, or if I did, they ended up on hard drives.

I first found Instagram during a camping trip in November of last year. We turned in early one night and I sat all zipped up in my tent looking for new apps (thankfully we had WiFi out in Bastrop, TX) and from the moment I took the first photos I was in awe of how easy it was to take a beautiful photograph.

With our photography company, Inkedfingers, we spend HOURS editing our images, going through each image, color correcting, changing curves, adding presets, and in less than a minute I created an image that from a layman's point of view, is almost indistinguishable on that tiny screen from what our $3,000 camera took. It's almost unbelievable. Instagram took the science out of taking a beautiful image.

At first, as part of the IG community, I tried to be anonymous. There was a freedom in knowing I could take whatever caught my eye without the pressure of a pay check, trying to please someone. I was making a memory of my own life. Then, inspired by other users in the community, I began to post photos of what I did for a living -- the latest postcard or rubber stamp we'd create or how I had my office set up -- and I got such positive feedback I posted more work-related photos.

Lately I've posted more behind the scenes shots, during an engagement shoot or what the church looks like during the rehearsal. I think others enjoy seeing something they might not see everyday and we've gotten from business from a few IG-ers!"

Inspired by: "Other IG users. It truly is a community. There are some users that I've become best friends with and connected with outside of the IG world and we find we have much in common aside from a love of photography!

What else inspires me? Whatever is around me at that moment: the sun's reflection on the water after a run, the way the books sit on my shelf or the light falling across the buildings downtown as I'm stopped at a red light. There was an art installment recently in Austin, called 'Play Me I'm Yours.' A curator set out pianos outside all across the city and told anyone they could play the pianos whenever. It reminded me of IG. It put a piece of art in whatever man's hand would reach out far enough to seize the opportunity. Unlike the community of Twitter, no common language is required. Only two eyes to open and see ... to find common ground with people all over the world. I love that. The world is a better place because of it."

Here are some tips from Rubin on how to make the most of our iPhone photos:

  • "Shoot with the iPhone's default camera app, rather than Instagram's built-in camera. This way you get a high-resolution, un-cropped original that you can post-process in other apps before sending through Instagram. It's also much faster if you need to shoot something in a rush.
  • If you have an iPhone 4, use the built-in camera app's HDR mode (be sure to go into the iPhone's Settings under Photos and enable Keep Normal Photo so you can choose the best exposure later), which often produces images that appear slightly sharper, with more shadow and highlight detail but without the over-used (and fake-looking) HDR produced by third party apps.
  • When using the iPhone 4's HDR mode, be sure to set the exposure of the image by tapping on either a light or dark area of the scene (or somewhere in between). This effectively 'hints' the HDR setting to give you either more shadow or more highlight detail than the default exposure (and practice makes perfect).
  • Don't shoot from eye-level. Eye level shows us what everyone always sees, even though it's seen through your eye. Squat down, find a different angle, move further from or closer to your subject than you normally would — whatever takes it one step beyond normal. This will help make even the most everyday subject look anything but."

"I've tried so many [camera apps] -- you should see how many I have on my phone -- but I don't like fussing with my photos too much, so I've stopped using most of them. Ulkuniemi has several tips for getting the most out of Instagram. First, he says, choose specific filters for intended effects.

"For Earlybird, for example," he says, "add some contrast and shoot the saturation skyhigh. Your picture may look a bit horrible before adding the filter, but just wait and see, you'll love the strong pastel tones of the finished product."

"Also, for photographing with an iPhone, having almost no control of things like aperture, shutter speed or anything has its good and bad sides," Ulkuniemi adds. "The really good thing is that you can concentrate absolutely on the composition and angle. iPhones are also fit for the most extreme kinds of angles: try sticking your camera lens below grass or into a crack in the wall."

Lastly, he says, shoot with an idea before you snap. "You can spend a whole day taking crappy, shaky shots, or you could think, visualize and make art that you and others love."

Is Mark Zuckerberg on Google+? [PIC]


Tech journalists aren’t the only ones with early access to Google’s latest social product, Google+. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also apparently snagged an invite to check out the social network designed to overtake his own.

As Forbes notes, he doesn’t look particularly happy about being there. The hazy webcam shot is a far cry from the smiling photo that graces his Facebook page:

He also hasn’t imported any of his interests, noting only that he is male and based in Palo Alto, California. His introduction? “I make things.”

He has at least connected with a number of fellow Facebook employees on the service, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Zuckerberg’s interest in Google+ lasts about as long as his exploration of Twitter.

Twitter Surpasses 200 Million Tweets Per Day


Twitter has achieved a new milestone: Its users now send 200 million tweets per day.

To demonstrate just how large a number that is, Twitter decided to do the math and see how many books could be written with 200 million tweets. According to its calculations, a day’s worth of tweets would be enough to write a 10-million-page book or 8,163 copies of War and Peace. Every second, 2,400 tweets are sent through Twitter’s servers, enough for 1.4 billion tweets per week.

Twitter surpassed 50 million tweets per day less than a year-and-a-half ago, and two years ago, Twitter users sent just 10 million tweets per day.

Twitter is growing at a rapid pace — and that’s why it is worth around $10 billion. It still has a ways to go before it reaches Facebook and its 750 million users though .

Ashton Kutcher & Village Voice Engage in Twitter War Over Child Prostitution


Ashton Kutcher is engaged in a Twitter war with The Village Voice, after the alternative weekly published an article criticizing Kutcher and his DNA Foundation.

Specifically, The Voice takes issue with the figures related to child prostitution in the United States. In April, the Demi and Ashton Foundation (DNA) launched a series of high-profile online videos designed to raise awareness of child sex slavery in the U.S.

The videos, which feature celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn and Jaime Foxx, take on the issue by juxtaposing humorous “Real Man” stereotypes with the underlying message that “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls.”

The Village Voice addresses the campaign and the statistics that it finds inaccurate in an article titled, “Real Men Get Their Facts Straight.”


A Question of Accurate Statistics


In media appearances promoting the DNA Foundation and its “Real Men” campaign, Kutcher invoked the frequently cited statistic that between 100,000 and 300,000 children are used for prostitution every year.

Kutcher isn’t the only person touting this figure. As The Voice points out, other publications including CNN, The New York Times and USA Today have all repeated this figure.

The problem, according to The Voice, is that the figure is inaccurate. It came from a report published by two University of Pennsylvania professors.

Not only does the figure itself not refer to actual child prostitutes — instead the 100,000 to 300,000 figure is related to children who are “at risk” for sexual exploitation — The Voice contends that the number of child prostitutes is actually a much smaller fraction.


Why Attack Ashton?


Even if we concede that the 100,000 to 300,000 child prostitute figure is an overestimate, why does The Voice‘s story focus on Kutcher — as opposed to all the other organizations that have also overused this likely inaccurate number?

While it is important to have a real discussion about accurate statistics, especially when these numbers are being promoted by celebrities and media organizations, Kutcher still strikes us a strange target. The article’s criticism seems to be less about the debate between whether celebrities help or hurt philanthropic causes and more about some of Kutcher’s social allies.

The article eventually makes its way to Linda Smith, a former congresswoman and founder of an organization called Shared Hope International. She works to raise awareness of sex trafficking and child prostitution, and she promotes Kutcher and Moore’s causes. In turn, DNA also promotes some of Shared Hope International’s goals.

Smith is controversial in some of her aims, which are part of a broader goal targeting pornography and the sex industry in general, not just child trafficking.

She testified before Congress about Craigslist in September 2010. Smith was one of many critics calling for Craigslist to shut down its adult services section, citing it as a major facilitator for prostitution, including child prostitution. These hearings and other public criticism ultimately led Craigslist to permanently shut down its adult services section in December 2010.

This is significant because The Village Voice, as it discloses in a sidebar to its article, derives a portion of its income by selling adult classified ads.

The Village Voice now sells its online ads via Backpage.com. Backpage, like Craigslist before it, is often a target of those opposed to the sex industry. It is also criticized as acting as a conduit to selling child prostitutes.

On Twitter, Kutcher responded to the Voice’s allegations by pointing out its own conflict because of its association with Backpage.


What’s the Real Story?


Ultimately, we agree that the 100,000 to 300,000 figure cited by Kutcher and other activists is probably inaccurate, at least for the U.S. But the article and context surrounding it raise interesting questions on multiple levels: Why Kutcher? Does the publication’s Backpage — the very enemy of Linda Smith — create a bias in its coverage of her?

New York City Proclaims June 30 Social Media Day

New York City officially proclaimed June 30 as Social Media Day on Thursday. Mashable is thrilled to make this joint announcement with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne.

“Mayor Bloomberg’s proclamation reinforces the growing importance of social media in City government and in New York City as a whole,” Sterne said in a statement. “Unveiling our Tumblr verticals, our expanded presence on Twitter and our bit.ly integration underscores the importance of social media in the lives of so many New Yorkers. We want to commend Mashable for their efforts in pioneering Social Media Day.”

Social Media Day is a day to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue. There are more than 1,400 registered Social Media Day Meetups throughout the world with more than 8,250 participants.

To celebrate Social Media Day, NYC Digital is launching a new custom link generator through bit.ly that involves increased analytics regarding how NYC.gov links are being shared. This is part of NYC’s ongoing efforts to be more digital and social. The recently published “Road Map for the Digital City” outlines how the city plans to embrace digital as a means for engagement, industry and open government.
